OpenStudy (abhisar):

In my last two tutorials of the series we talked about the effects of Tobacco and Alcohol. In this tutorial we will see the effects of various other drugs. First of all what is a drug ? You might have noticed the same term at a pharmaceutical shop. `Any substance, other than food, used in the prevention, diagnosis, allevation, treatment or cure of a disease in mn and animals is called a drug.`

OpenStudy (abhisar):

So now we know that generally a drug is a chemical which when taken, in someway alters the body functions of the person. Drug is also called as a medicine. But some drugs are addictive, and if taken regularly may cause addiction and compell the user to abuse it.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

What is sthe difference between use and abuse ? Taking drug for a medical purpose to treat body's disorder or injury is known as its use but intake of a drug for non-medical purpose and in amount, strength, manner or frequency that impairs physical and mental functions is called its \(\bf abuse\) or misuse and the person who takes a drug for non-medical use is called a \(\bf drug~abuser\)

What is sthe difference between use and abuse ? Taking drug for a medical purpose to treat body's disorder or injury is known as its use but intake of a drug for non-medical purpose and in amount, strength, manner or frequency that impairs physical and mental functions is called its \(\bf abuse\) or misuse and the person who takes a drug for non-medical use is called a \(\bf drug~abuser\). The term abuse with respect to drugs implies three aspects: \(\bullet\) Non-Prescribed use \(\bullet\) Non-Medical use \(\bullet\) Use for having pleasure.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Before we talk about the various drugs abuse by addicts, lets see some common features they have 1) They are used without the physician's prescription. 2) They are to be taken regularly or frequently. 3) They are habituating or habit forming substances. 4) They mostly affect the brain and alter consciousness, perception or behaviour. 5) They give temporary pleasure. 6) They are often obtained and taken secretly. Certain drugs are prescribed by physicians for the prevention or treatment of diseases, or for increasing the physical and mental performance and are withdrawn as soon as the desired effect is achieved. Repeated use of certain drugs on a periodic or repeated basis may make the body dependent on them. This is caled \(\bf Drug~dependence\).

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Drug Dependence is of two types: \(\bullet\) Psychological Dependence It refers to the person's belief that the normal state of well being can be attained only with the drug's action. \(\bullet\) Physiological Dependence It refers to the person's state when intake of a drug becomes essential to maintain physiological equilibrium. In such a case, the nervous system functions normally in the presence of the drug only. \(\bf Stages~Leading~To~Drug~Dependence\) A person becomes drug-dependent through following stages 1) \(\bf Experimental~use\) He first takes a drug for curiosity 2) \(\bf Recreational~use\) Then he starts using the drug for the so called pleasure. 3) \(\bf Situational~use\) After this, he joins the company of drug abusers and begins to take drug more often. 4) \(\bf Compulsive~use\) Now the use of drug becomes compulsory for him. 5) \(\bf \color{red}{Dependence}\) Finally, he becomes habitual to drug use and cannot leave it. His daily dose to get the desired effect increases with time.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

\(\bf Early~Warning~Signs~of~Drug-dependence\) 1) Academic deterioration as indicated by poor performance in the class and examination. 2) Evasion of family duties and responsibilities. 3) Changes in behaviour such as telling lies, violence, moodiness, etc. 4) Physical changes such as red eyes and decreased appetite, vigour and weight, etc 5) Quick changes in personality and friend circle. 6) Legal problems such as arrest by police for obtaining and keeping drugs unlawfully. \(\bf Factors~That~affect~drug~Action\) 1) The drug taken and its form (crude or purified) 2) The dose of the drug consumed. 3) The route of taking the drug-oral, intramuscular or intravenous injection, drinking or smoking. 4) Period over which drug is consumed. 5) Drug abuser's susceptibility.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Now, the time has come when we should learn about the different kinds of \(\bf Evil\) drugs.! The addictive drugs are grouped into two main categories: psychotropic drugs and psychodelic drugs.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

\(\huge \sf Psychotropic~Drugs\) These drugs act on the brain and alter behaviour, consciousness and capacity of perception. Hence, they are also termed as mood-altering drugs. The repeated use of these drugs makes the body dependent on them. `The psychotropic drugs are classified into four major groups : tranquillizers, sedatives and hypnotics, opiate narcotics and stimulants.`
