Who were the Redeemers? They were a group of Southern black ministers who tried unsuccessfully to integrate churches across the South. They were the Democratic leaders who worked to restore state governments in the South to their pre-Civil War status. They were the Liberal Republicans who broke with the Radicals and tried to rebuild their relationships with Democrats. They were the white supremacist groups that carried out campaigns of violence and intimidation against blacks and white Republicans.
