3x+y=8 -x-2y= -10 So if you want to isolate x in the second equation, you would need to add 2y to both sides and then divide by a -1 to get a positive x. Your equations would then look like this 3x+y=8 x= -2y+10 Now since you need to eliminate either x or y you need to see which equation you could add or subtract to get either x or y to equal 0. 2y-10 is your answer.
