Solve for x 8x+5y=9

OpenStudy (haleyelizabeth2017):

Do you know how to start?

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

I guess you have to move the 8x over to the other side?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

huuuuuuuuuuuuuh

OpenStudy (haleyelizabeth2017):

*hint hint* only the 8x should be on the left side of the equal sign to begin with......you are solving for x, not y :D

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

Right i forgot. you move the 5y and then its 8x=9-5y ?

OpenStudy (haleyelizabeth2017):

Yep! Good job! Now we need to isolate the x.....how do you get rid of the 8?

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

dividing.

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

thats sort of where i got stuck. I haven't done this in years even though it was easier when i was younger XD

OpenStudy (haleyelizabeth2017):

yep! So here it is: 8x+5y=9 8x=-5y+9 x=-5/8y+9/8 So that's your answer! :D

OpenStudy (haleyelizabeth2017):

you just need to divide all of the terms by the same number and for example, if it was 4y instead of 5y, you would need to simplify -4/8 it to -1/2....

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

So... x=-2?

OpenStudy (haleyelizabeth2017):

no......that was an example for if you would have to simplify it...:/ it's x=-5/8y+9/8 and in order to find a number for x instead of a term, you would need the value of y :D hope this helps!

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

Okie dokie thanks. ^-^

OpenStudy (haleyelizabeth2017):

No problem! If you need any more help, feel free to ask me! :) Glad I could help
