how do i solve |3x-7|+12<5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

should i substract 12 |3x-7|<-7?

OpenStudy (phi):

the first step is add -12 to both sides (or subtract 12 from both sides) you get |3x-7| < -7 now you should think. what does | | do ? It makes whatever is "inside" positive. The smallest the left side can be is zero. Does that make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah

OpenStudy (phi):

is 0 < -7 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (phi):

0 is as small as the left side gets, and 0 is not small enough (it's not smaller than -7) so what x makes the left side smaller than -7 ? (hint: none!)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so is it undefined?

OpenStudy (phi):

I would say there is no "x" that makes the relation true. i.e. there is no solution.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

uhmm thanks :D
