How to simplify?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[\sqrt{384x^4y^3}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@kropot72

OpenStudy (aamirgsen):

8√(6)√(x^4 y^3)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't need the answer directly @Aamirgsen I want to learn how to do it.

OpenStudy (aamirgsen):

oh okay

OpenStudy (aamirgsen):

so we can do it a step at a time

OpenStudy (aamirgsen):

first do the 384

OpenStudy (aamirgsen):

then the x and y

OpenStudy (aamirgsen):

so you'd get 8 * √6 * √x^4y^3

OpenStudy (aamirgsen):

that's weird for some reason

OpenStudy (aamirgsen):

from that for the first part you can get 8x^2y

OpenStudy (aamirgsen):

and then you can't really do anything with the √6

OpenStudy (aamirgsen):

so it's 8x^2y * √6y

OpenStudy (aamirgsen):

all the question marks are square root symbols by the way I don't know why they're showing up like that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh okay so like they say 8x^2y*sqrt 6

OpenStudy (aamirgsen):

yup

OpenStudy (aamirgsen):

did that help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alright

OpenStudy (aamirgsen):

I think I can explain it more if you need it

OpenStudy (aamirgsen):

okay cool

OpenStudy (mrnood):

I don't think that is correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@MrNood How would you go about doing it? I don't remember how to do them since it's been some time since I've had to do these

OpenStudy (mrnood):

sqrt(384)*sqrt(x^4)*sqrt(y^3) = sqrt(384) * x^2 *y^3/2 then simplify the 384

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got 8*x^2*y*sqrt (6y) Find the highest root of each right?

OpenStudy (mrnood):

no - why have you got 6y? sqrt 384 = sqrt(64)*sqrt(6) = 8 sqrt(6) \[8\sqrt{6 }\times x ^{2} \times y ^{\frac{ 3 }{2 }}\] cannot be further simplified I think. I don't like giving the answer - but cannot see a better way of leading you to it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1416780170711:dw| So that's where the 8 comes from |dw:1416780227365:dw| That's where the x^2 comes from |dw:1416780281628:dw| That's where the y comes from. So what's left is the 6 and the y still withing the sqrt So it'll be 8*x^2*y*sqrt (6y)
