What satirical statement does Washington Irving make about Tom Walker and society in this excerpt from "The Devil and Tom Walker"? He insisted that the money found through his means should be employed in his service. He proposed, therefore, that Tom should employ it in the black traffic; that is to say, that he should fit out a slave ship. This, however, Tom resolutely refused: he was bad enough in all conscience, but the Devil himself could not tempt him to turn slave-trader.
A. Shunning slavery is expected even from morally corrupt men like Tom. B. Although Tom shuns slavery, he still oppresses people with extortion. C. Supporting slavery and participating in the slave trade is evil. D. Tom realizes that the slave trade is worse than extorting money from others. E. Indulging in extortion is more reprehensible than supporting slavery. here are the options....please help, will give medals:) @arabpride @animal_lover36 @AngelPSP @AakashSudhakar @absurdism @alesia/bailey @bibby @confluxepic @CausticSyndicalist @Destinymasha @Donblue22 @FibonacciChick666 @FibonacciChick666 @Gokuporter @heyits-eliciagarza @iambatman
So, what is a satirical statement first?
Satire is a genre of literature, and sometimes graphic and performing arts, in which vices, follies, abuses, and shortcomings are held up to ridicule, ideally with the intent of shaming individuals, corporations, government or society itself, into improvement
I thunk it's D, but not sure.. :)
i think its not d..
that was my guess. if not...what do you think it'd be?
so in lay mans terms, what does that mean?
im not sure..
in order to answer this question, you need to really understand what a satire is
Actually..... I agree with @shadowlol
i posted the definition of it.
because " Tom resolutely refused: he was bad enough in all conscience, " aka, he was realizing that slave trade was awful (:
and he didnt want to do anything bad again, he had apparently, A very bad passed
past* pass ugh whatever point is he had done bad things before xD
it makes me think he may be understanding because of his past...
well he thought " : he was bad enough in all conscience, " 'he was bad enough' that means he didnt want to do anything else that was negative
so possibly a?
honestly, im stuck between a and d .-.
D was my first thought.
but i am kinda where you're at now
i think a because, "the devil" ' insisted ' thinking tom would go ahead and do the slaver ship thing, so he judging tom by his corrupt past
But then i think "d" because tom realized that the slavery ship thing wasnt right.
but i guess the whole moral and genre of the expert is that you could expect shunning slavery from corrupt men.
so i think a
well, you couldn't expect shunning slavery from corrupt men ;)
in real life no, because no one should judge a book by its cover but this story was made by an imperfect man trying to persuade people about his opinion being correct, to judge everyone by their past,
a does make sense....
but that's the thing, http://examples.yourdictionary.com/satire-examples.html Check this out
i am now...but just looked real fast and there is possibly irony in the answer?
@FibonacciChick666 what are you thinking?
well @specek18 , I gave u my opinion, id personally go with "a" , but I didnt really take the class u are taking, so im not 100% sure. I dont know much about the topic, but I gave u all i know. hope it somehow helped. good luck (:
essentially, you need to determine what you think this phrase means "This, however, Tom resolutely refused: he was bad enough in all conscience, but the Devil himself could not tempt him to turn slave-trader."
okay. i'm just gonna click a:) thank you everyone!
