Whats the difference between a novel and a novella?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A novella is a narrative work of prose fiction somewhat longer than a short story but shorter than a novel. A common length is about 50 to 100 pages, or around 20,000 to 40,000 words. The extra length is generally used for more character development than is possible in a short story, but without the much greater character and plot development of a novel. "Novellas" are the Latin American version of soap operas on Univision and other TV. The stories usually run for about 6 weeks. So "novella" means two things as you hear it these days. There is a literary meaning of the term "novella", which is basically a short form novel (this is what Steve Martin wrote), and the context you seem to have heard it in, which is the Latin American name for a serialized TV show (which Salma Hayek has been connected with creatively).
