Solve. 4y + 16 > –8 A. y > –6 B. y > –2 C. y > 2 D. y > 6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so do you know how to do this??? it would A.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its a?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well treat the > sign as if it were an = with a few restrictions.

When you divide/ multiply by a negative number the sign flips, but it seems you won't have to deal with it here, so you can just do the algebra. To do the algebra, what you do to one side, you must also do to the other. So for example: 3x+3<4 And I say solve for x, so you look at the left side and say ok, how am I going to get x by itself. Lets try the opposite operations, therefore lets eliminate +3 first, by subtracting 3 on both sides: 3x+3-3<4-3 3x<1 Now you say mhm what about the 3x? How do I get rid of the 3 "attached" to the x, and you can see it's the same thing as multiplying, 3*x so the opposite operation, is divide, lets divide both sides by 3. 3x/3 <1/3 you can see the 3's get cancelled on the left side and you're left with: x<1/3.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because firstyou have to subtract 16 and when you subtract you switch the ssign when dealing with negatives you get 8 and then you divide it by 4. So you get, x<2..............

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y < 2 *

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so are these all your answer choices

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so its b

lets do this together..|dw:1416778587924:dw| thats the answer, lol sorry
