rolling motion:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i know that F3 moves it to the left and F1 moves it to the right. but why does F2 move the object to the right. its torque about the momentary pivot looks like its clockwise to me?!

OpenStudy (surry99):

Hint: Break F2 into components

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i did and i drew a line to check the direction of the torque

OpenStudy (surry99):

So, F2 has a component in the same direction as F1....agreed?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

agreed

OpenStudy (surry99):

so if f1 moves it to the right why wouldn't f2? The key again is in a FBD.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

does the vertical component override horizontal component and cancel the torques altogether

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you also check the moment of inertia question on the other physics group?

OpenStudy (surry99):

no, the vertical component would tend to want to lift the object up reducing the magnitude of the normal force. The horizontal component would pull it to the right. Both components would create counterclockwise rotation

OpenStudy (surry99):

Send me a link to the other problem

OpenStudy (surry99):

Just looked at it, can you send me a photo of the problem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the vertical component would be similar to F3, right? so, the horizontal component would rotate it clockwise and the vertical component rotates it anti clockwise, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you're saying that the object would move to the right as well as rotate counterclockwise, then that wouldn't be right because then, the object will not 'roll without sliding'

OpenStudy (surry99):

is there friction in this problem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (surry99):

|dw:1416791622810:dw| So here is the first case....easy to see it rolls to the left. I want you to draw the FBD for cases 2 and 3...and don't forget to include friction.
