Ambassadors Training Session 1 for Cohort 2.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Keep forgetting to post this... but here it is. This particular session, I made a video for. There are a few layers to the video. What you see, what I say, and some notes on the screen at different points are actually related to the same topic, but coming at it in different ways. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5x-sT8eZo6o I also did a transcript for it: http://assets.openstudy.com/updates/attachments/5326a704e4b06a39f86211dc-e.mccormick-1395042283167-ambitrainingsession1v1.pdf This talks a bit about business culture. This is an important concept when you are fitting in to an organization, like being an OpenStudy Ambassador. The same applies to fitting in at a new school, job, etc. There is always a culture to your environment and the active recognition of it, the rules it adheres by, and how to fit in better are important skills to learn. The specific task for helping you achieve this goal on OpenStudy is the active examination of the rules of the site. Be sure to follow the instructions on how to complete this task. @sammixboo @YanaSidlinskiy @girlover @shreehari499 @asevilla5 @Broskishelleh

OpenStudy (yanasidlinskiy):

@e.mccormick the pdf doesn't open.

OpenStudy (girlover):

It opens for me!

OpenStudy (girlover):

I agree on setting out an example for the fellow openstudy users. They look up to us and watch our every move. Us, ambassadors, are here to help, greet, and set an example for the others!

OpenStudy (yanasidlinskiy):

Ahh, luckyxD It says that it loads but never opens. It's wierd. I've been literally waiting for about 30 minutes for it to open.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Try and download it first, or just watch the video. It is mostly a transcript.

OpenStudy (yanasidlinskiy):

This is what I'm getting and I did watch the video:) Never knew u liked star wars, hahha!!!

OpenStudy (girlover):

Here you go! I screenshotted it for you!

OpenStudy (yanasidlinskiy):

Lol, thanx, hahha!!! I didn't think you'd do that for me. I was just pointing it outxD Lol. But thanx anyways.

OpenStudy (yanasidlinskiy):

Same thing on the video.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

@YanaSidlinskiy Evil Overlords must be aware of the mistakes of others... And yes, most of it is a transcript of the video. But there are some other thins in the video that show on screen that are not in the transcript. Lile the stuff when the orgainazational flow goes on... That is actually 1475 frames, hand made by me, and stitched together into a few seconds of video.

OpenStudy (yanasidlinskiy):

Corrected you, *things and *Like and *organizational. Wow!!! What a hard worker!

OpenStudy (girlover):

Your welcome Yanna!!

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

In the PDF?

OpenStudy (yanasidlinskiy):

No in your last comment above mine, lol. But I never got the PDF opened. I just use the scrnts she gave me.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Anyhow, remember to read through the CoC and TaC, then post questions and comments. Ignore they lysdexic poor typist.

OpenStudy (yanasidlinskiy):

Already read everything. It was kind of a reading practice too, haha! Lol, we all mistakes. I guess we all are "lysdexic poor typist" And u just made another mistake in spelling, hahha!! Lol, I'm just kiddingxD

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

You* did too. =P Well, if you have no questions, remember the option of comments. "If you already get the rules, point out parts you feel are key with a short reason why."

OpenStudy (yanasidlinskiy):

u* It's just a short word for you. So that doesn't count, lol. And kay.

OpenStudy (girlover):

I already pointed out key things of my interest and gave a reason.^.^

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

But where is "I agree on setting out an example for the fellow openstudy users. They look up to us and watch our every move. Us, ambassadors, are here to help, greet, and set an example for the others!" in the CoC or TaC? I know it is in the video, but that is not what I am looking for comments on.

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

Yay so now I am done. Whens the next training :D

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

@TheSmartOne 1) You did not follow the directions or you would hve posted a relevent part here. 2) you do not have access to the other half of this training session.

OpenStudy (girlover):

Hmm well I have no questions on coC or the TaC, but I do have maybe one question. When answering questions on the CoC it says give an explanation for your answer, but other nonambies who look to see any mistakes the coc that an ambie does says that even after the explanation We should not give an answer. Can you explain in more detail the situation.

sammixboo (sammixboo):

In the CoC it states to give help and lead the asker to the answer, but sometimes users can't find a way to explain the answer without giving out the answer itself. Say a user is helping someone with a multiple choice question, but does not know how to explain the answer without giving the answer away. Would explaining why the other choices would be wrong a good way to help someone with their question without giving the answer? I was thinking that if a user explains why the other choices are wrong it is still a way to give the asker a direct answer, so what would be the best way to answer a question that you do not know how to answer without giving the direct answer?

OpenStudy (girlover):

http://openstudy.com/users/compassionate#/updates/5444f6ffe4b044d2f3c2a2a2 never mind I see what it states right here!

jaynator495 (jaynator495):

im not an ambi but i went to training anyway... does that count? XD

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Do we want direct answers? No. Do we want complete answers with a detailed explanation? No. However, just suspending everyone that does these is not productive. Instead, it is better to help guide the person. This applies to the tutor as well. It is better to guide them into how to guide others.

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

I didn't read it lol I just said I did.... Anyhoot this isn't for me "yet"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can I read it even if I didn't apply?

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

No harm I suppose...

OpenStudy (compassionate):

If you're not going to contribute to the thread, then please do not clutter up the logs.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

TaC says "All educational content on the Site, including but not limited to Blogs, Textual Annotations, postings on StudyPads, Questions and Answers and status posts, and other User Content legally posted on the Site is available based on the terms and conditions of the Company's Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial 3.0 Copyright." Question: Suppose in order to explain something I post my own work on OpenStudy. Does that mean I am granting copyright permissions for my work to OpenStudy?

OpenStudy (compassionate):

Yes and no. Creative Commons is a form of copyright that OpenStudy uses to avoid some legal red tape. To sum it up, Creative Commons says that when you post something to OpenStudy, then OpenStudy is free to edit, remove, transform or redistribute that to any medium or format. Note; the word here is "legal." If you were to post illegal content, such as particular forms of pornography, threatening or demeaning language, and so forth, such that it violates U.S; Federal or International Law, then OpenStudy does not claim any rights other than its right to remove and prosecute the user. All illegal content is solely that of the original poster. Now, when something legal is posted, such as a tutorial, OpenStudy has the right, under Creative Commons, to take that tutorial and post it on their blog, or tweak your tutorial a little bit to make things clearer. Does that make sense? It's a lot like Preetha copying and pasting your post to use it as an example but slightly change the grammar and remove images from it (and maybe add her own). Hope this helps.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Question on Direct Answer `Situation 1` Asker Please check my answer Which of the following is responsible for gametogenesis in human males? a)Testes b)Ovaries c)Adrenal d)Kidneys I think it's A Testes Helper Yes that's correct `Remarks: In this case rather than giving the answers directly, the helper is just giving the confirmation on what the asker already knows but without any extra input/explanation or trying to involve the asker into the discussion.` `Situation 2` (for same question and statement of asker) Helper Kidney is an organ which is responsible for excretion and adrenal is an endocrine gland which is responsible for secretion of hormones like adrenaline, epinephrine etc. Testes and Ovaries are organs involved in gametogenesis. Ovaries are found in females while testes are found in males. Now what do you think should be the correct answer ? Asker: I think it should be dfntly Testes. Helper: That's correct `Remarks: The helper did the same thing but included the explanation and effort to involve the asker into the discussion` Which of the above situations will be considered/Not considered as a violation of the policies (CoC+TaC) ?

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

The Privacy Policy says (at the end), "I am over 13 years of age, and agree to the Terms of Use and understand the Privacy Policy." So if a user is under 13 he is not allowed? Even with parent's permission? Also why does it not say I also agree to the Code of Conduct?

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

@Abhisar The granting is covered in a different part of the TaC: When you post User Content to the Site, you authorize and direct us to make such copies thereof as we deem necessary in order to facilitate the posting and storage of the User Content on the Site. By posting User Content to any part of the Site, you automatically grant, and you represent and warrant that you have the right to grant, to the Company an irrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive, transferable, fully paid, worldwide license (with the right to sublicense) to use, copy, publicly perform, publicly display, reformat, translate, excerpt (in whole or in part) and distribute such User Content for any purpose, commercial, advertising, or otherwise including reporting suspected cheating or violations of intellectual property rights to your academic institution or others who have a need to know of such activity, on or in connection with the Site or the promotion thereof, to prepare derivative works of, or incorporate into other works, such User Content, and to grant and authorize sublicenses of the foregoing. You may remove your User Content from the Site at any time. If you choose to remove your User Content, the license granted above will automatically expire, however you acknowledge that the Company may retain archived copies of your User Content. OpenStudy does not assert any ownership over your User Content; rather, as between us and you, subject to the rights granted to us in these Terms, you retain full ownership of all of your User Content and any intellectual property rights or other proprietary rights associated with your User Content. As for detailed answers: \(\textbf{Give Help, Not Answers}\) - I will encourage and guide those needing help, and not just give them an answer An explanation is a way of guiding people. This makes it the borderline because it is not \(\textbf{just}\) the answer. However, it is still discouraged because it is not really a great way for people to learn. If it really worked, all people would need is books. @TheSmartOne The Code of Conduct is listed under Arbitration, but yes, I think it would be more clear if it was listed elsewhere and have brought that up before. According to COPPA, they need very clear permission from the parents and they simply do not have a system for that, so it is easier to disallow people under 13 than it is to risk a $16,000 fine.

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

$16,000 dollar fine? Ok definitely shouldn't allow users under 13 then...

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Yes. COPPA violations are a $16,000 per violation fine. They have hit companies for millions. It is just not worth the bother.

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

Termination The Company may terminate your membership, delete your profile and/or delete any content or information that you have posted on the Site or through any Platform Application and/or prohibit you from using or accessing the Service or the Site or any Platform Application (or any portion, aspect or feature of the Service or the Site or any Platform Application) for any reason, or no reason, at any time in its sole discretion, with or without notice, including if it believes that you are under 13, or under 18 and not in high school or college. So by termination do you mean deleting all traces of the account? For example, all chats, messages, questions asked and answered. I know that is all deleted from normal people eyes but probably archived for mods and admins eyes. I have heard UsArmy was a troller and that he was banned, but I do not see any account with that name?

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

@e.mccormick

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Usrmy is not the complete name. He is still around and admits who he was. Kevin has come a VERY far way from when he was a problem userr that got involved in chat fights all the time. I think he needed some time to realize that the fights were just a waste of time. Is it possible to delete an account? Well, back at the start, when they were writing all these rules, it was easier. The database was not terabytes in size, there was no smart score, etc. Then the thing grew. So the implication that they can delete things remains while the truth is they just unlink the posts from view and that is about it.

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

Oh so due to SS we no longer let people delete their account.. Got it and "UsArmy isn't his full name" That makes more since :D

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

More since when? =P

OpenStudy (compassionate):

Accounts can theoretically be deleted and surely you can remove the link to them, but that would require some heavy tasks and some coding. Preetha isn't a computer programmer.

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

^^ but @c0decracker is :P

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Actually, it is a somewhat simple command in the database. It is just with the size it would take a lot of time per user and it would change a lot of other things. The complex part is really making sure you get it all and don't break other accounts while doing it.

OpenStudy (shreehari499):

I was A bit late...sir BUt Yeah...I've completed the assignment ... with one Doubt...Why do we NEED A CHAT bar??...People are unnecessary talking nonsense in that section...and I've also seen the use of bad words in the chat bar..Is the chat bar damaging the policy of STudy,Help etc in the website? @e.mccormick :l

OpenStudy (abhisar):

This Site is intended solely for Users who are thirteen (13) years of age or older. Any registration by, use of or access to the Site by anyone under 13 is unauthorized, unlicensed and in violation of these Terms of Use. By using the Service or the Site, you represent and warrant that you are 13 or older and that you agree to and to abide by all of the terms and conditions of this Agreement. Now suppose someone is actually 13+ but swears to be under 13 on the website through posts/chats/messages. Is he/she still violating the agreement?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Does using any language other than English on the website (openstudy.com) violates the policies (CoC+TaC)?

OpenStudy (compassionate):

i. Technically he is not breaking that specific rule, however, he my be suspended for other charges. If a moderator feels he is under 13, and he claims to be, he may still be suspended based on probable cause. ii. No. All languages are supported, however, the terms to mention not using multiple languages are switching between languages or speaking in code with the intent to be malicious and cause chat disruption; for example: Speaking German, French, Russian, English and Hebrew while constantly switching instead of speaking just one of them.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

CoC says `Don't be offensive, inappropriate, or creepy! So avoid:` Since the website is open for 13+ , Do you think posting video links like surgery videos (like this one http://youtu.be/egIqLe4b9_A?t=5s which i believe is not fit for under 18) violates the policies?

OpenStudy (compassionate):

Well - that video technically is NA because it's educational. This is why schools will often show Sex Ed videos to 5th graders. It's hard to delegate; if someone is just posting a video that has gore or contains nudity for no reason other than to disrupt; then yes it is against the rules, however, some medical students have a legitimate reason; so it may be overlooked

OpenStudy (abhisar):

*Don't agrre

OpenStudy (abhisar):

*agree

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

@shreehari499 Actually, you have 2 weeks to complete each... and are you on Yammer for that part? I don't remember if I saw you there. I need to post the second one. Wheee! And there were some fixes from last time. Herm.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

If someone lists their age anywhere as sub 13, I suspend them. The punishments for the company for having sub 13 users are just too harsh to risk it. COPPA is very nasty and their only defense is that the people claim to be 13+, but once it is discovered they are not, well, things need to be addressed.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

As for videos, there is a clear ruling on not posting some types. Specifically, anything rated R or that would have an adult advisory in a store. But educational videos are generally not rated at all. That makes them sort of a gray area.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

@shreehari499 The chat bar serves two purposes. It adds a more social element to the site, which is a minor purpose to it. More importantly, it allows for people to post links to questions outside of a less frequented topic area. Until there is a good substitution for this second issue, the chat bar is a necessary evil. Come up with a really good way for people to promote their questions and the need for the chat bar becomes less and less.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

There is still a week if you want to ask more on this as part of the assiggnment, but I am posting the new one.

OpenStudy (shreehari499):

I'll join Yammer as fast as possible..:)
