Which of the sets of ordered pairs represents a function? A = {(–5, 5), (–2, 2), (2, –2), (5, –5)} B = {(4, 2), (3, –2), (9, 4), (11, –3)} (4 points) Only B Both A and B Neither A nor B Only A

OpenStudy (aum):

A function should pass the vertical line test. That is, the same x value should not have two or more different y-values. A = {(–5, 5), (–2, 2), (2, –2), (5, –5)} The x-values are: -5, -2, 2, 5. They are all different. So the same x-value does not give two different y-values. So this is a function. Try the same logic for B.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im guessing its only A

OpenStudy (aum):

For example, P = { (1, 5), (2, 8), (1, 10) } is NOT a function. The first pair, (1,5), says when x = 1, y = 5 The last pair, (1, 10), says when x = 1, y = 10. So the same value of x = 1 gives two different y-values: 5 and 10. This is NOT a function.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so its not A

OpenStudy (aum):

A = {(–5, 5), (–2, 2), (2, –2), (5, –5)} The same x-value does not give two different y-values. All four x-values are different and so there is not possibility of the same x-value giving two different y-values. Therefore, this is a function. B = {(4, 2), (3, –2), (9, 4), (11, –3)} The same x-value does not give two different y-values. All four x-values are different and so there is not possibility of the same x-value giving two different y-values. Therefore, this is also a function.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OH SO ITS BOTH A AND B!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@aum

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is this right?

OpenStudy (aum):

Yes, both A & B.
