I can't find the answer in here.. Development of African Civilization. Farming skills and the use of animals to do man's work entered Africa from the Middle East. They quickly spread throughout North Africa and the region of the Sahara. At that time, the Sahara was a fertile grassland. By about 2500 B.C., a changing climate had turned the Sahara into the vast desert we know today. People who farmed there were forced to move south where they could continue to raise their crops. Before that time, people south of the Sahara knew nothing about farming. Soon agriculture had spread into central Africa and as far east as Ethiopia. An important group that entered central Africa was the Bantu-speaking people. The Bantu-speakers were skilled in farming and in the use of iron. Hundreds of years passed, and these farmers expanded their control over the land until they occupied most of western Africa south to the Kalahari Desert. As their migration continued, they encountered other tribes: Bushmen, Pygmies, and Hottentots. The Bantu-speakers either absorbed these peoples, intermarrying with them, or drove them into the rain forests and deserts to live. The Hottentots adopted the Bantu-speakers' culture and learned to live with them. The culture of the Bantu-speakers was affected by their rapid migration. As they moved deeper into Africa, they moved away from the advanced civilization and new inventions of the Middle East. Nevertheless, the Bantu-speakers soon developed new ideas and inventions of their own. Cities began to arise in North Africa about 2000 B.C. New inventions continued to be brought into Africa from the Middle East. Although the use of bronze was restricted to North Africa, iron technology spread through Egypt into the kingdom of Kush. Handwriting was introduced from the Middle East and facilitated the developing sea trade of North Africa. The great Roman Empire brought new trade routes across the Sahara and the Nile River valley. New trade brought new ideas and goods, especially those of Rome. Roman influence was greatest in Aksum and Nubia. Aksum became prosperous as a result of trade between the Romans and India. When Rome controlled Egypt, Nubian kingdoms along the Nile River maintained extensive trade there. For hundreds of years, the strongest West African empire was Ghana, but as it declined, it was replaced in the 1200's by Mali in what is now Guinea. Mali was replaced later by Songhai as the seat of power in West Africa. During this time the kingdom of Congo, at the mouth of the Congo River in Angola, was the largest political empire in southern Africa. The Lubas also were a southern African empire.
