I think because this way it makes the story more proverbial, and you get the lesson clearer; heck, YOU could be that person and that could be your dog, and this way it makes it more general, like it applies to EVERYBODY'S life, not just the man. ANYBODY could make the mistakes the man made, that's what Jack London was trying to say. It makes the meaning more profound and more deeply meaningful. Thats what the site said
