Please help me! Last question! Get a fan and medal Which fractions are equal to -5/16. A. -3/8 B. -11/32 C. -1/4 D. -1/8 Choose exactly two answers that are correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Figure out what you have to multiply by each denominator to get 16. Then multiply the numerator by that same number for each fraction and see which ones equal -5.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For example, -3/8. To turn the 8 into 16, we need to multiply by 2. So multiply the -3 by 2 also, and you get -6. That means -3/8 = -6/16. So this is NOT the correct answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i believe it is probably C or D let me make sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-1*-1=5/ -4*-4=-16

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-1*-5=-5/ -2*-8=-16

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it must be c and d

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No... whatever you multiply the bottom by to get 16, you have to multiply the top by the SAME NUMBER. For c, you multiplied the bottom by 4, but the top times 4 would give you -4.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmmm this one is tricky

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A. -3/8 becomes -6/16 (times 2) B. -11/32 becomes -5.5/16 (times 1/2) C. -1/4 becomes -4/16 (times 4) D. -1/8 becomes -2/16 (times 2) None of those equal -5/16.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but i have to choose one though

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmmm lets try dividing it together -5 divided by - 16

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i divided it and got 3.2

@sleepyjess @djlicks @TheAsker2002

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok my sister just showed me a new way to do this i divide all the fractions and see which 2 are closer to 0 on the number line.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so i was right c and d because they are closer to 0 in decimal form.
