what does 5 times the sum of a number and 8 look like?

OpenStudy (k_lynn):

5 times a number which would be a variable like n would look like this. \[5 \times n \] now just put + 8 on the end of that. \[5 \times n +8\] do you understand that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Its 5x(n+8) I would say. Its hard to say because its how you interpret the wording of the question.

OpenStudy (k_lynn):

nevermind it would look like this \[n +8\times5\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes i understand but we are using like X ... so

OpenStudy (k_lynn):

well if your answers include x it would be x+8*5
