The easiest way for me to do it is to change the square root to an exponent like this: \[- (2-4x)^{1/2} = -(3-8x)^{1/2}\] square both sides and you get -2+4x = -3+8x since squaring a square root gives you the original expression 4x = -5+8x -4x = -5 -x = -5/4 x = 5/4
