Which number shows 92 x (10 to the fourth power) written in correct scientific notation? A. 9.2 x (10 to the third power) B. 9.2 x (10 to the fifth power) C. 9.2 x (10 to the fourth power) D. 9.2 x (10 to the sixth power)

sammixboo (sammixboo):

Well, what does 92 x 10^4 equal?

sammixboo (sammixboo):

Also take a look here to read some more info on Scientific Notation. I suck at explaining scientific notation, but I am good at it xc http://www.chem.tamu.edu/class/fyp/mathrev/mr-scnot.html

920,000?

sammixboo (sammixboo):

Yes it does equal 920,000, so now we must put 920,000 into the correct scientific notation form. We must move the decimal placement over to the left until the number is in the tenths placement (9.2). Count how many placements you move and that will be your exponent. So we know now that we have \(9.2\times10^?\), and remember what I said. Count how many placements you moved, and that will be your eponent

sammixboo (sammixboo):

exponent*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The exponent is 5?

sammixboo (sammixboo):

Yes, that makes your answer \(9.2 \times 10^5\) Sorry for the confusing explanation T-T... I can't really find a good way of explaining it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's no problem, you explained it very clearly in my opinion! Thanks. :)

sammixboo (sammixboo):

Ah okay :P No problem!
