Why do photographers use the "Rule of Thirds"?

@Owlfred

OpenStudy (k_lynn):

@e.mccormick can you help me, please?

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

It has to do with how the mind and eye works and putting the object of focus into a scene. Do you know what the rule of thirds is?

OpenStudy (k_lynn):

sort of. I took a photography club last year. I think its kind of like separating the subject into 3 parts of the canvas.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

If you divide the view into thirds both high and low you make a grid: |dw:1417043957961:dw| This makes 4 intersections. If you keep the subject near one of those intersection points, you can add an environment to the picture. This tells a larger story and is less a portrate type picture. Here are some great examples: http://www.photographymad.com/pages/view/rule-of-thirds

Ok, I think I get it now. Thanks!
