What about it?

Many people believed that the Black death was a punishment from God. Jews became the scapegoats. It was their fault because they've sinned. Great persecution of Jews took therefore place in several countries where thousands of Jews were murdered to suppress the people's fear of infection. Other people began to live ecclesiastical and donated everything they had and took to avoid being infected or to survive the infection. Some also joined processions between cities and whipped onself with a thorny whip for 33 days: one day for each year Jesus lived. The Pope encouraged the processions at first, but when the "walkers" in the processions revolted because they thought the priests lived a sinful life and should do the walk aswell, destroying religious services and assulting priests; he forbade the processions instead. Some people argue that it was the Church that made the perfect conditions for the Black Death to prosper. They blame poverty on the Church. If you're taking a test; this is not worth mentioning, but if you're writing an essay this could give you some extra credit if you look into the Churchs connection with poverty in the 1300's.
