One of the most striking and dramatic events of the Great Depression was not an economic crisis, but rather a natural and ecological disaster—the Dust Bowl. Beginning in 1930, just as the Great Depression was gripping the nation, a series of droughts and dust storms wracked the U.S., extending all the way from Texas and Oklahoma to Canada. These “dust bowl” conditions lasted for nearly six years, and they further devastated areas already hard-hit by the farming crises of the 1920s and by the Depression.
