In the cytoplasm just outside the mitochondria, glucose is broken down into smaller molecules through a process called glycolysis (literally "sugar breaking"), which releases chemical energy. This energy is temporarily captured by specialized molecules and transported through the mitochondrial membranes into the mitochondria.
