Which of the following is a trinomial with a constant term? A: y^5 B: x^(4-7)+3 C: x=4y+7 D: -x+y^10 E: x^3+11x^2+x F: y^7-29

OpenStudy (freckles):

trinomial has three terms

OpenStudy (freckles):

how many terms are there in A?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2?

OpenStudy (freckles):

y^5 is one term

OpenStudy (freckles):

terms are separated by addition and subtraction signs you have no addition or subtraction so you have one term in A we don't care about A since there is only one term and we want three terms

OpenStudy (freckles):

now a trinomial is a polynomail which means your exponents should only be nonnegative intergers that is your exponents can only be 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,.... but what is wrong with B?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the exponent is 4-7

OpenStudy (freckles):

and 4-7=-3 we can not have negative exponents since we are looking for trinomials

OpenStudy (freckles):

good

OpenStudy (freckles):

now is C written correctly?

OpenStudy (freckles):

I see C is not an expression it is an equation

OpenStudy (freckles):

unless there is something written wrong about it

OpenStudy (freckles):

C: x=4y+7 is this correct? or is it suppose to be x-4y+7 or x+4y+7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my bad, it was x+4y+7.

OpenStudy (freckles):

how many terms do you see there?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3

OpenStudy (freckles):

right

OpenStudy (freckles):

and is there a constant term? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes?

OpenStudy (freckles):

a constant term is a lonely term like you will not see any kinda variable next to this term like for example: 34x^2+x+4 4 is a constant term 243x^2-y+5 5 is a constant term

OpenStudy (freckles):

x+4y+7 has 3 terms and is a polynomial so therefore is a trinomial and the constant term is 7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you

OpenStudy (freckles):
