Let f(x) = -2x+4 and g(x) = -6x-7. Find f(x) - g(x). This is what I have so far... (f - g)(x) = f(x) - g(x) = (-2x+4) - (-6x-7) = 4x - (Stuck from there :/ )

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

distribute the negative through to get... (-2x+4) - (-6x-7) -2x+4 - (-6x) - (-7) -2x+4 + 6x + 7 I'll let you finish

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

notice how the signs of everything in (-6x-7) changed -6x turned into +6x -7 turned into +7 all because of the negative out front

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4x + 11... So all I do is distribute the negative? Then add like terms?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

correct

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you can think of (-2x+4) - (-6x-7) as really (-2x+4) - 1(-6x-7) the negative out front is really -1 out front. And you distribute like normal

Thank you so much!!! :)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you're welcome
