what is atp and what is its role in the cell

OpenStudy (ageta):

All form ATP from adenosine monophosphate (AMP) or adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and inorganic phosphate. When the reaction goes in the other direction, ATP is broken down to ADP or AMP and phosphate, and the released energy is used to perform chemical, electrical, or osmotic work for the cell.

OpenStudy (javk):

ATP is short for Adenosine Triphosphate. It is formed during cellular respiration and is used in metabolic activities, such as muscular contraction. During this process ATP breaks down into ADP and an inorganic phosphate ion, releasing energy in the process. This energy can then be used by the cell. In short it is a temporary storage for energy within cells.
