For aspiring authors, the goal of writing is to tell a story, to express themselves artistically, or to simply finish the book. However, readers love to talk about literature and discuss which books are good or bad. To recognize what they consider to be good literature, there are several different awards. (2) The Nobel Prize in Literature is awarded by the Swedish Academy each year to the person who makes the greatest contribution to the field of literature. This prize is international, so it can go to authors from any country. Winners of the award receive a medal, a cash prize, and, of course, the prestige of winning the Nobel Prize. (3) Usually called “the Booker,” the Man Booker Prize is a much newer award than the Nobel Prize. It was first awarded in 1968, and it is a British award, so it can only be won by a citizen of the Commonwealth of Nations or Ireland. Winning the Booker will make a book a very big seller, and its author will gain instant respect. For a British, Indian, or Canadian author, this is one of the greatest accomplishments he or she can achieve. (4) In addition to those awards, there is an award for American authors. The Pulitzer Prize is an award that is given strictly for works in the United States. The Pulitzer was first awarded in 1917 for reporting. Since then, several categories have been added, including fiction and music. American authors can strive to win both a Pulitzer and a Nobel Prize. William Faulkner and Ernest Hemingway received both honors. (5) The reasons why authors write may vary, but they all try to create a great work of art first. Receiving an award is just a bonus. Regardless, winning the Nobel Prize, the Man Booker Prize, or the Pulitzer Prize is a sign that an author has written something truly great. 3. Which of the following should conclude paragraph 1? The Nobel Prize in Literature, the Man Booker Prize, and the Pulitzer Prize are among the highest honors that an author can be given. The Nobel Prize in Literature, the Man Booker Prize, and the Pulitzer Prize are valuable because they increase book sales for authors. The Nobel Prize in Literature, the Man Booker Prize, and the Pulitzer Prize are usually just given to the most popular author instead of the best author. The Nobel Prize in Literature, the Man Booker Prize, and the Pulitzer Prize all reward authors for great works, but the Nobel Prize is the greatest of them all.

The Adopt-a-Highway Program Imagine a beautiful painting or portrait of the Grand Canyon. The morning light rolls in from the east, and a purple haze eats away at the horizon. There is a gold line where the sun is cutting its way into the empty gorge that seems to go on forever. Now imagine the same beautiful image where the landscape is riddled with Styrofoam plates, empty aluminum cans and water bottles, and clusters of fast food bags blowing onto the foreground. Suddenly, the Grand Canyon doesn't look nearly as majestic. The way something is presented can change someone's perspective on something. In order for America to protect its beautiful scenery, more individuals need to adopt highways. The population of the U.S. is growing all the time. A growing population means more cars on our roadways. That means more trash. One way to reduce the amount of trash on roads is for more people to adopt highways. Several states have "adopt-a-highway" programs. The programs allow people or groups to "adopt" a section of a highway. That person or group is responsible for making sure that section of the highway stays clean. This helps the state save money. That money can then be used to make landmarks and monuments beautiful. This is money that the state would have had to pay someone to clean the highway. Research has also shown that highways that have "adopt-a-highway" programs are usually less littered than those cleaned by road crews. The South Carolina Litter Patrol statistics state that of the 250 miles from Gaffney to Macedonia, 100 of the miles were part of the state's adopt-a-highway program. 100 of the 250-mile stretch had 18,285 fewer pounds of garbage. This shows that the programs work. Finally, adopting a highway doesn't take up nearly as much time as hiring an outside group to clean up a highway. People complain about time, well, all the time. Time is precious to everyone, but cleaning up an adopted highway doesn't take up any time at all. Think about how much time it takes to cut the grass in your front lawn. Think about the time it takes to spend an afternoon shopping. If more people knew that volunteering to clean up the highways they use took up less time than they think, most would jump at the chance to do it. 7. Which does the author use to support the belief that adopted highways have less trash than non-adopted highways? examples of people who have adopted highways and how it has changed their lives statistics showing the difference in pounds of trash between the two types of highways facts about highway patrolmen who have seen people who litter on highways testimony from lawmakers about trash found on adopted highways

Keep Babies Away From TV, Warns Psychologist A psychologist at Harvard Medical School has criticized Sesame Workshop. They produced a DVD aimed at babies and toddlers aged 6 months to 2 years. In an interview with the Washington Post, Susan Linn called the DVD "a betrayal of babies and families." Linn is also founder of the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood. She added, "There is no evidence that media is beneficial for babies, and they are starting to find evidence that it may be harmful. Until we know for sure, we shouldn't risk putting them in front of the television." Sesame Workshop produced the DVD with the group for child development, Zero to Three. They also make Sesame Street for PBS. Rosemarie Truglio of the Workshop says they "did a lot of research and preparation" for the video." However, Zero to Three cofounder T. Berry Brazelton is lending his name to the opposition. He urges that "children under two be kept away from screen media. It's too expensive for them physically as well as psychologically." adapted from http://newshare.com/sb/ 9. What statement from the article is an exaggerated claim to keep babies away from TV? "They are starting to find evidence that it may be harmful." The DVD is "a betrayal of babies and families." "We shouldn't risk putting them in front of the television." "There is no evidence that media is beneficial for babies."
