Jalyssa Richardson L.A. – Period 1 Paragraph The similarities and differences between the behaviors of societies’ people can be compared and contrasted to real world and the novels The Giver and Fahrenheit 451, based on the type of government they are held under. In both novels and real life, societies’ people can have either the same or different reactions. Influenced by different types of government can make societies feel different about certain topics. For example a quote from The Giver. “There’s nothing we can do. It’s always been this way. Before me, before you, before the ones who came before you. Back and back and back.” This shows the bitterness in Jonas. He feels that as if the past defines him and that generation. He sees no way past the past. While towards the real world for some of societies’ we can use the past to make us better. Also relating to Fahrenheit 451, Montag understands later on that the past can be learned from while in the beginning he was bitter and did not understand why the past would help educate the people. This shows how the government can affect our thinking. By being in different types of governments we learn different things such as the past and the education of we get from the past. Another example is also shown in The Giver. “We really have to protect the people from making wrong choices.” This quote explains how the government feels about the people in The Giver. By reading this quote you can infer that the government does not trust the people. They feel as if the need to protect them from the harm of feelings. Unlike in the real world where we are able to have a say. We are able to stick up for ourselves and make our own actions. Also reflecting on Fahrenheit 451 I feel as if they are treated the same as in The Giver. Both governments want to rule the people in some way and be able to control them. The last quote is from the novel Fahrenheit 451. “So it was the hand that started it all….. His hands had been infected, and soon it would be his arms… His hands were ravenous.” This quote refers to Montag. He is guilty for what he has done in the past. Influenced by his type of government he didn’t think of wrong at the time. Only did he think he was doing right. This can relate to both real world and The Giver. Guilt is a form that we all come upon. Like how people in real world feel guilt for doing something wrong or bad. While in The Giver in the end the government feels bad for keeping feelings away from the people. So to reflect on this piece in my own thoughts I think the government can affect how you view the world. It can affect you thoughts, mind and importantly your behavior. If you know nothing else but that government you may think what they are doing is right but in the mind of others it’s wrong. By the effect of government your lifestyle and thinking are honestly very different. But if you have key components like feeling and other connections you can connect to others behavior.
