The concept of 'fair trade' has been around for over 40 years but a formal labelling scheme didn't get off the ground until the late 1980s. In 1988: launch of the first Trade label, Max Havelaar, under the initiative of the Dutch development agency. The first 'Fairtrade' coffee from Mexico was sold into Dutch supermarkets. It was branded "Max Havelaar," after a fictional Dutch character who opposed the exploitation of coffee pickers in Dutch colonies
and world war II ended 1945 so the 1980's is after world war II
The practice officially started in the 1940's NOT the 1980's!
