Discussion. (Post YOUR opinions.) (For writing report) Should Kids (any age) get charged for bullying another student? If proof is added

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I personally believe that you should get charged. If people knew that it would be put on their permanent record, bullying reports would lower drastically. I mean, how many suicides does it take for people to realize that words DO hurt?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You can get charged if that person commits suicide, you will be charged for murder.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you are threatened you can be charged for threatening, If you are in contempt in bullying you can be charged with Assault or attempted assault. (Talked to some members of the police department.)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ANd I completely agree with you mariahthewind

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Depends on how they react, and what type of bullying... I have been bullied, but I wouldn't charge them for it...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In my personal opinion from personal experience, if the bullying includes threatening behavior of any kind to the point where the victim in question is scared for their life or safety, then I believe yes because too many kids have lost their lives to bullying and I believe it needs to stop :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It wouldn't be you that charges them, If a school official is aware I think the principal needs to be notified and the law called to start an investigation. When I was bullied (Still am) I didn't fear that they were going to hurt me, I feared that I was going to hurt myself. Schools and teachers don't take it seriously because they think it's a childish thing that will stop at the end of the day. Now? Certain people (groups, race, sex) are targeted. I think If there is proof that that person is bullied, the bully should be charged and or sent to jail (16+ age) for a week or more. Depending on the situation

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

Bullying shouldn't be tolerated at any age. If the rule isn't enforced when they're young, why bother when they're older. It's simple, if a child isn't told that it's wrong, and isn't punished for it, they will just continue to do it as they think/believe that there are no consequences.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there is an age where they know it's wrong though.

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

Bullying should be taken seriously, as I myself have seen the effects of bullying. I knew someone that committed suicide...those people who bullied that kid were horrible.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I've have bad experiences with schools not handling bullying

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

Exactly, law enforcement needs to be involved. Imagine being a 10yr old bully and having police officers come talk to you, that would be pretty scary and the 10yr old, with all his/her toughness, would take this seriously. But for that age, jail would be a bit too harsh, perhaps some other form of punishment would have to be involved. Community service perhaps? Just something to show that what they did was wrong. Schools do next to nothing to stop bullying, law enforcement would do much better.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Law enforcement aren't even doing their jobs.. Some are. Others... just.. abuse it

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

Still, something has to be done and obviously schools arent doing their job.

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

All around school they just have those stupid "Don't Bully Signs", which does nothing.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Exactly

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think I am going to protest.

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

If anything, it just mentally remind the bully that they have to go punch somebody

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Problem is.. You can get charged for Assault if you punch that person firs t

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

Yeah, that is true.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And the bully can get away with it..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The fact that.. No offense to people. I'm poor. And rich people (Mainly referring to mean people with lots of money) Pay their way out or just get out in general..

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

If paying their way out, you mean by good lawyers? I guess so. Or it could also be by people who contribute to the school, I can see how that would go as well. The school that me and my sister go to, people donate 50k + , even millions.

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

Private school ;P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I go to an Early college school... I'm a ghost there.. I hate it... I can't even afford lunch and they lowered lunch for "Immigration reasons" and took me off..

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

Immigration reasons o_O That doesn't really make sense

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know right!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I tried for months to try and get free lunch.. now I don't eat. I can't afford food. so only food i get is leftovers for dinner

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

Are you an immigrant yourself?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Nope. All family born and raised here. I'm very Country. I just hide it.. alot

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

Haha was gonna say, you don't look like an immigrant. (If that is your pic) haha, but I thought I'd ask anyway.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(It is, Yes, An old on, I was 14 in that pic) and it's fine. I understand

OpenStudy (camerondoherty):

I think Yes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes to what? please explain.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't believe bullying should be monitored. I think the main issue is social media, where in the older days, bullying stayed at school and you'd come home to a house where those problems were no longer, but now you come home and your problems follow you to your social media site of choice. So I think that Social media is the issue, not bullying.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's not monitoring bullying, it's certain situations that I think students should be charged, social media should be monitored.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I disagree. If you're under 18 you shouldn't be charged with something that could ruin your life forever.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but they should have known better.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Bullying is already illegal in most states so yes they should get charged. They decided on their own to insult someone, hurt someone, and put them down over whatever reason. Nobody deserves to be hurt whatsoever. It doesn't matter their past or what they've done, bullying is wrong and everyone makes mistakes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait last statement: if you're like 5-12 then get punished but not charged but if you're 13+ I think you should.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think bullying should only be charged when it can be proven to have caused permanent damage. Let's face it, kids are stupid. I've made plenty of decisions I regret. If insulting someone becomes illegal, then that means free speech becomes illegal. I don't want that to happen.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Insulting isn't the only way of bullying. You can harass someone physically. You can spread rumors. Cause someone to hurt themselves and even kill themselves. You can spread an embarrassing picture... I learned all this in a video for my class a couple years back. Freedom of speech will NEVER justify bullying or cyber bullying. Believe it or not words CAN hurt. But words aren't the only type of bullying there's tons of other ways you can. Bullying can cause people to turn to self-harm, suicide, eating disorders, etc.. I will never believe freedom of speech justifies this. You grow a conscious mind around 7-10 years of age (learned this in psychology) by then you know how to make your own decisions. If you decide to bully someone then you should pay the consequences. EVERYTHING you do has consequences so why should bullying not have them? Fine let's not charge kids but teenagers I believe are way past old enough to know wrong from right. Parents and teachers should also teach them not to bully. This is my opinion and it will never change.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think there should always be consequences however the problem with the continuation of bullying isnt that there isnt any consequences but instead it is a lack of official authority being involved. This is really no ones fault. The problem is that often it is between the bully and the victim. the bully isnt going to turn themselves in and the victim wont say anything in fear of things becoming worse. I' have been bullied a lot in my life and at first i would tell an adult but i eventually realized that this only angered my bulllies more as it gave them more fuel for the fire.
