-x-y=1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im going graphing

OpenStudy (aripotta):

when you convert it into slope-intercept form (y = mx + b), graphing should be easy

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont understand it at all im bad at math

OpenStudy (aripotta):

you wanna take your original equation, -x - y = 1, and get y by itself on the left hand side. do you know how to do that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well you gotta do they whole x and y table .. but to your ? no i don't lol im dumb

OpenStudy (aripotta):

i don't think you need to do an x/y table. you're graphing it on a coordinate plane, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think so idk... but either way i don't know what im doing

OpenStudy (aripotta):

lol ok. so what i was saying earlier...-x - y = 1, to get y by itself, first add x to both sides since + is the opposite of - so -y = x + 1 and we don't want y to be negative, so to fix that, we're going to multiply the whole equation by -1 so y = -x - 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then what do i do

OpenStudy (aripotta):

so the y-intercept is -1. that's gonna be our first point on the graph, (0,-1) the slope is -1. so that means, from our first point (0,-1), we'll go down 1 and over to the right 1. that'll give us our second point (1, -2). and because we have two points, we can put our line between them

OpenStudy (aripotta):

did that make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but i need three points, and how did you get the points

OpenStudy (aripotta):

why do you need three points?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk thats just what it is

OpenStudy (aripotta):

ok so then just use your equation y = -x - 1, substitute 0, 1, and 2 for x and solve for y to get your three points

OpenStudy (aripotta):

i have to go

OpenStudy (aripotta):

sorry i can't help more

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but wait i don't know how

OpenStudy (aripotta):

i'll do 0 for you y = -x - 1 y = -0 - 1 y = -1 which gives us a point of (0,-1)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but how do you solve to get (0,-1)
