The short answer is: transatlantic trade making the best use of the prevailing resources and logistic conditions to generate profit. The long answer requires a bit more explanation. Look at a world map to follow this. In those days (16th to early 19th century) only sailing ships were used, and it was easier and faster (time was money even in those days) to sail with the prevailing winds or currents. The triangular trade route originally started in the UK (e.g. Liverpool, Bristol or Southhampton) where merchant ships took goods (cloth, iron tools, glass beads, guns) on board, set sail to the south for West Africa (present-day states of Senegal, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Benin, Togo, etc.) traded their goods there for slaves, transported the slaves west across the Atlantic to the Caribbean (e.g. Jamaica) or the US east coast (Georgia, Virginia, etc.), traded the slaves for other goods there (e.g. sugar, cotton, tobacco) and traveled back northeast to the UK ports. The sea route (south, west, northeast) is roughly the shape of a triangle. The traders at each point of the triangle (UK, Africa, Caribbean/Eastern US States) benefited. The slaves, of course, did not.

Northerners who were business owners bought cotton from the south that was grown and picked by slaves. Factory workers in the north feared that freed slaves might take their jobs for less money. Abolitionists were against slavery. Quakers and Christians were too. --Northerners thought slavery was bad. Once Uncle Tom's Cabin came out, they became steadfast in their beliefs. The Irish and German immigrants didn't want the slaves to be freed, because the slaves would get paid less than the Irish and German, so the immigrants would lose their jobs. The South wanted slaves because they had to grow cotton and other crops.--

OpenStudy (quin100):

they were more moral (northerners )

OpenStudy (quin100):

Abolitionist Movement summary: The Abolitionist movement in the United States of America was an effort to end slavery in a nation that valued personal freedom and believed "all men are created equal." Over time, abolitionists grew more strident in their demands, and slave owners entrenched in response, fueling regional divisiveness that ultimately led to the American Civil War. - See more at: http://www.historynet.com/abolitionist-movement#sthash.n69evXNU.dpuf
