Which set of ordered pairs represent y as a function of x? A. {(-9, 2), (0, 6), (1, -2), (-3, 6)} B. {(-1, 0), (4, 3), (-7, -3) (-1, -8)} C. {(3, 2), (-4, -2), (3, 1), (-4, 1)} D. {(5, 4), (2, 3), (1, 1), (2, 4)}

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

it is a function if there are no x values that are the same. There can be y values that are the same, but no x values. So what do you think ? Which one has no 2 x values the same ?

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

your points are set up like (x,y)...so which one has no duplicate of the first number in each set

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

for instance...look at choice 4. There are 2 two's in the x value spot....that means it is NOT a function.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it a? im not sure

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

excelllent...you got it. There are no 2 x values the same...it is a function

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

typo...excellent

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks! and could u help me with two more questions?

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

I can try...can't promise anything

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

oh...sorry...that I do not know. I am so sorry :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh its okay thanks tho

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

wait...I think it is G. I just looked up something...it was talking about a vertical line test http://msenux.redwoods.edu/IntAlgText/chapter2/section3.pdf G passes the vertical line test making it a function

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks! i remember something about that

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

I am not the best with functions...I had to do some research...lol
