How do you describe f(x)=1/2 |x| please i really need help

OpenStudy (immanuelv):

http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=+f%28x%29%3D1%2F2+%7Cx%7C this should help you out

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that didn't help sadly

OpenStudy (briensmarandache):

in words, where -x values correspond to the y of the positive x value

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you explain more please

OpenStudy (immanuelv):

y axis is reflected :D whoops

OpenStudy (briensmarandache):

perfect immanuelv!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmm im still kinda lost

OpenStudy (briensmarandache):

that was a much better was of saying it

OpenStudy (briensmarandache):

way*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i know f(x)=1/2 is .5 on the y axis why does |x| spread the graph like that

OpenStudy (briensmarandache):

so f(x)=.5x produces a line, this is beacuse for the -x values the y values also become neg. so when you have f(x)=.5Abs(x), where x = -2 for example, plug the value in. so .5Abs(-2)= .5(2)= 1, so your y=1 and you x = -2 graph it.

OpenStudy (briensmarandache):

it looks like that because for the -x value it produces a positive y, instead of the expected -y. which would produce a line instead of a "v" shape

OpenStudy (briensmarandache):

get it?

OpenStudy (briensmarandache):

if you still don't understand ping me
