WILL MEDAL!!! The temperature of a gas decreases 0.045°C every minute for 8 min. What is the change in the temperature of the gas? Use a positive or negative number to express the change in the temperature of the gas.

@Hoslos

OpenStudy (briensmarandache):

your looking for the rate of change which is expressed as rate/time. since the change is neg ====> -rate/time

OpenStudy (anonymous):

??? clearer please?

OpenStudy (briensmarandache):

so in speed is a rate of change/time, 30mi/hour. here your rate is not a distance, its an amount of degrees / min

OpenStudy (briensmarandache):

your speed*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Rate of a quantity is quantity/time. Since we use SI BASE units, you should first convert those 8 minutes into seconds, becoming 8*60= 480s. So the rate of change is -0.045oC/480s. But the best rate to give has to be something/second. So you divide both sides by 480, having 9.4*10^-5degreesC per second.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i'm still confused *_*

OpenStudy (briensmarandache):

you are taking -.045C/8min and turning the denominator into a unit of secs, -.045C/480s, but this is still describing a change in mins, so you multiply the top to get it over one sec. so the expression would then be describing a change per sec

OpenStudy (briensmarandache):

sorry , you multiply the top by 480

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so -.045c times 480?

OpenStudy (briensmarandache):

sorry divide

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my calculator says that it's 0.00009375

OpenStudy (anonymous):

DomPoppy, first things first is convert the minuts to second. So instead of 8 mins, you have 8*60 = 480 s. So your rate of change is -0.045degrees per 480 seconds. But to represent rate, we present as per 1 second or per second. SO for that you will have to divide both values of temperature of time by 480, so that you have per second instead of per 480 seconds. You will finally get -9.4*10^-5degrees /second. Got it ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Correct.

OpenStudy (briensmarandache):

well its supposed to be neg but yeah, that = to 9.4*10^-5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so is my calculator right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or wrong?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-89?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it -89?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hello?

OpenStudy (briensmarandache):

-9.4*10^-5degrees /second

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-94?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Your calculator was right when it was - 9.4*10^-5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it is -89?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-89 what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ummm -89 * 480?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-42720

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No. I said -5 first you had 0.045/480, have to divide both of those numbers by 480, getting -9.4*10^-5 degrees per second.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-445?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@freckles

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Did you get ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well, you told me -5 so i tried -5 but i still don't know why -5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

My mistake. Just read the whole phrase without the 5 thing.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i do not get ^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what the heck is ^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What is that you dont get ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

To the power of.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there's ^ for negatives?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i really need to be done with this test soon its 11:38 pm where i am and it will count it as me doing it tomorrow if i don't get it done before 12:00

OpenStudy (anonymous):

scratch that, its 11:41 where i am

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Mind telling me where are you ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why does it matter?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am just curious to hear a country different from where I am.
