\[3x^3y + 12xy - 3x^2y - 12y\]Rewrite the expression so that the GCF is factored completely. Rewrite the expression completely factored. Show the steps of your work. If the two middle terms were switched so that the expression became \[3x^3y - 3x^2y + 12xy - 12y\]would the factored expression no longer be equivalent to the rewritten expression you did in the second question? Explain your reasoning.

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

We could factor it by grouping...

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

So if we rearrange the terms we get \(\ 3x^3y-3x^2y+12xy-12y\)

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

And if we take out the common factors \(\ 3x^2y(x-1)+12y(x-1)\)

OpenStudy (camerondoherty):

Do you multiply?

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

So if we had to factor it we would get \(\ (x-1)(3x^2y+12y)\)

OpenStudy (camerondoherty):

And to check you would multiply it out, right?

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

Yup :D

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

We could also plug in values and see if it the same

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

We could also graph it...

OpenStudy (camerondoherty):

For x and y?

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

yes if we plug in values for x and y

OpenStudy (camerondoherty):

And for the last question, it is yes, right?

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

Yes

OpenStudy (camerondoherty):

My internet is slow, I had to refresh the page because it didn't show you replied cx Thank You so much c:

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

No problem :D
