OpenStudy (zephyr141):

can someone help me with this question about the modulus elasticity and a body centered cubic structure?

OpenStudy (zephyr141):

explain why the modulus of elasticity of single crystal BCC iron is much higher in the {111} directions as compared to that in the {100} directions.

OpenStudy (surry99):

sure. 1) draw bcc cube 2) add coordinate system 3) draw vectors We can go from there...

OpenStudy (zephyr141):

I didn't fully understand this portion of the lecture when we covered it. From the notes this is what the BCC of iron looks like.|dw:1417836740993:dw|ok so here's my answer to this and please correct me if, and i'm very much expecting to be, I'm wrong. So the modulus of elasticity of iron along the {111} plane has more atoms in the BCC along the way that it makes the modulus of elasticity stronger making the atoms want to hold on to each other a little longer. in the {100} direction there's a minimal amount of atoms in the path of the {100} direction and lesser modulus of elasticity.
