Look at the image, first column (meiosis 1) In the first step (prophase 1) crossing over occurs, you can compare it to scrambling an egg but with chromosomes, this is done to create genetical diversity. Normally if a cell divides (mitosis) both new cells will have the same chromosomes, but in this case (meiosis) it's all scrambled up so they're genetically different. If they were not, everyone would look the same :P
