OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you know what the union operator does?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it means to take elements from both the sets ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah. so when you have 1 union 2, it means {1, 2}. so the first thing is asking what is the probability that you will get either 1 OR 2 if you roll the die with sides 1, 2, 5, 5, 6, 6.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the basic probability formula is $$P = \frac{number\thinspace of\thinspace desirable\thinspace outcomes}{number\thinspace of\thinspace total\thinspace outcomes}$$

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the probability would be 1/3 look at freaking options

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in this case there are 2 unique desirable outcomes out of 6 total outcomes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so ya, it's 1/3.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what about P(5 U 6) ?

OpenStudy (phi):

count how many 5's or 6's are possible. divide by total number of choices (6) simplify the ratio

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that gives 1/3 too and P(2 U 5 U 6) gives 1/2 which doesn't even exist in the table

OpenStudy (phi):

notice 2 of the 6 sides have a 5 on them 2 of the 6 sides have a 6 how many sides have a 5 or a 6 ?

OpenStudy (phi):

do you get the idea ? For example, if *all* 6 sides had a 5. you would a chance of getting a 5 of : 6 sides / 6 sides= 1 (which should make sense... 100% chance yo get a 5) if you had 3 of the sides with a 5, you would get a chance of 3/6= 1/2 in the case of P( 5 U 6) count how many sides have a 5 or 6 on them. How many ? then divide by 6

OpenStudy (phi):

1,2,5,5,6,6 means the die has those numbers on its 6 sides: a "1", a side with a "2", two sides with "5" and two sides with "6"

I get it thanks !
