Factor the trinomial -63y^2-23+56

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

shoudn't that be -23y?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

correct...Problem is -63y^2-23y+56

OpenStudy (coconutjj):

easy way is to first solve it, then factor using the roots

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

we need to play around with the factors of -63 and + 56 and find the combination which gives - 23 as the coefficient of y

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

there are various ways to find the factors - my way is really trial and error but i find it works for me.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I was trying to use 8, and 7, but did not equal to the sum of 23....

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

you can get -23 using -63 = 9 * -7 and 56 = -7*-8
