Meiyou ren jiang putonghua zhongguo?

OpenStudy (sleepyhead314):

"Zheli you mei you ren shou putonghau ma?" would be a more accurate phrasing for "Is there anyone here that speaks Mandarin Chinese?"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha xie xie!

OpenStudy (aishanuwang):

Keep in mind, it's usually more common to use 中文 (zhōngwén) or 汉语 (hànyǔ) rather than 普通话 (pǔtōnghuà). :)

OpenStudy (sleepyhead314):

? is that so? my grandparents would always refer to it as "putonghua" maybe because they now live in beijing but my grandpa had been from henan?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (sleepyhead314):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh.

OpenStudy (aishanuwang):

@sleepyhead, I'm just speaking based on preference. :) "普通话" refers specifically to mainland Mandarin Chinese (keep in mind mainland doesn't include Taiwanese Mandarin, and in mainland China they use simplified characters whereas the Taiwanese normally use traditional), so if you want to be specific, then yes, you'd ask if someone spoke 普通话, but if you just wanna ask if someone speaks Chinese in general you would use one of those other two, that's all :o

OpenStudy (sleepyhead314):

well yeah, in this case I would assume @shifuyanli would prefer mainland simplified chinese rather than traditional ;)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah i would

OpenStudy (aishanuwang):
