OpenStudy (thatonegirl_):

Why don't Gram negative bacteria hold a stain?

OpenStudy (petiteme):

Well, Gram-negative bacteria are a class of bacteria that do not retain the crystal violet stain used in the Gram staining method of bacterial differentiation, making positive identification possible.

OpenStudy (thatonegirl_):

But what do they have that resists most stains?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

they just have two layers of cell membrane, instead of the one membrane that gram-positive bacteria have.

OpenStudy (thatonegirl_):

I found in my reading that it's because they have thin cell walls and partly because of large quantities of lipoproteins and lipopolysaccharides in the wall

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well, it all plays into that. but if you want to remember easily, just imagine that the dye can't get inside the cells if there are two cell membranes. the other stuff if also true =) if you want I can explain in an exaggerating manor.

OpenStudy (thatonegirl_):

okay i c what ur saying, ty :)
