5x+3y=2x+8

OpenStudy (aripotta):

what do you have to do?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

solve for x

OpenStudy (aripotta):

ok so you wanna get x by itself on the left side of the equation. to do that, we first have to get rid of 3y. how should we do that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

subtract it from the left side

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think u are right so far i ant ood at math sooo

OpenStudy (aripotta):

well, you subtract it from both sides. so now we have 5x = 2x - 3y + 8 now we have to get rid of the 2x on the right. how do we do that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-3x= -8+3y = x= 8/3 +y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wouldnt you combine like terms and get 7x?

OpenStudy (aripotta):

no, you would also have to subtract it from both sides after you do that, you'd get 3x = -3y + 8

OpenStudy (aripotta):

we don't 3x, we just want x. so we're going to divide both sides by 3

OpenStudy (aripotta):

we don't want 3x*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wouldnt it come out as -8/3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i mean positive

OpenStudy (aripotta):

3x = -3y + 8 x = -y + 8/3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so you divide both by -1 and get x=-8/3?

OpenStudy (aripotta):

we can't actually solve for x. we can only solve for x in terms of y x = -y + 8/3 is as close an answer you get without knowing what y is

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay thank you

OpenStudy (aripotta):

no problemo :)
