Please help! Medal and fan to whoever helps! Two factory plants are making TV panels. Yesterday, Plant A produced 5000 fewer panels than Plant B did. Three percent of the panels from Plant A and 2% of the panels from Plant B were defective. How many panels did Plant A produce, if the two plants together produced 500 defective panels?

OpenStudy (kropot72):

Let the number of panels produced by plant B be n panels. Then the number of panels produced by plant A is (n - 5000). Now we can form an equation using the given values of percentages of defectives, but expressing 3% as 0.03 and 2% as 0.02. \[\large 0.03(n-5000)+0.02n=500\ .........(1)\] After you solve equation (1) for n, you just need to subtract 5000 from the value of n to find the number of panels produced by plant A.

Assuming I did it right I believe plant A produced 8,000. Does that sound correct?

OpenStudy (kropot72):

Yes, you are correct. Good work!
