OpenStudy (micahm):

Presidential power has expanded significantly since the beginning of the 20th century. Presidents used to be often times at the mercy of the Congress and the Supreme Courts. However, as we have witnessed, especially recently, Presidents often find ways to get around the separation of powers. For example, right now the United States is fighting two wars, Afghanistan and Iraq. However, a legal declaration of war was never decalared in either case. The same with Vietnam, Korea and Kosovo. Why? Because the president used an 'expanded definition' of Commander in Chief to fight battles without Congressional approval. This shows how the President has more power and authority today than ever before.
