PLEASE HELP ME

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Do you know how the substitution method works?

OpenStudy (catlover5925):

oks o for substitution on one equation you would solve for Y, then plug it into the other equation to get X

OpenStudy (catlover5925):

do you want me to work through this with you??

OpenStudy (uri):

Solve for x first cancel out -6y +6y

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Yes, that's correct. We can do it together, but before we even start the substitution method, we can simplify both equations. Notice that both equations are divisible by 6, so let's start by dividing both sides of both equations by 6 to get smaller numbers.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

@uri The problem specifies substitution. You are suggesting the addition method.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Here is the system of equations. \(36x - 6y = 144\) \(72x + 6y = 720\) Let's divide both sides of both equations by 6.

OpenStudy (uri):

Opps. Didn't read it eh. Sorryz. :3

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

\(6x - y = 24\) \(12x + y = 120\) @lillyflowerrr Do you follow so far? All I did was divide both equations by 6 to get smaller numbers to work with.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

@uri No problem. We are all trying to help.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

What is 4?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the answer

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

I don't know. I haven't gotten there yet.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

To use the substitution method, now you solve the second equation for y. Can you do that? What do you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nevermind thanks though i got bumped out

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Sorry I couldn't answer any more, but I lost my connection. 1) Solve second equation for y: \(y = -12x + 120\) 2) Substitute into first equation: \(6x - (-12x + 120) = 24\) \(6x + 12x - 120 = 24\) \(18x = 144\) \(x = 8\) Now substitute 8 for x in the first equation: \(6(8) - y = 24\) \(48 - y = 24\) \(-y = -24\) \(y = 24\)
