Please help! Solve for x: -3|x + 7| = -12 x = 5 over 3, x = −19 over 3 x = −3, x = −11 x = −3, x = 11 No solution

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is tricky. Is this hw or do you have time for an elaborate explanation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the answer is B

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have time as long as it doesn't take two hours lol. And thanks abswag, but I would like an explanation too

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x = -3. X = -11

OpenStudy (anonymous):

b is correct. i did that in my head and yes thats correct. whatever is inside the absolute value trues positive

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok well @pythonwizard ill explain to you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do the math inside the absolute environment and then if its negative, turn it positive and multiply by the number infront

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if not negative, then just multiply it by the number infront. :-) anything else you want to add @abswag13

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh I see, I wasn't sure what you did with the number after you got the absolute value, thanks! Watch this I even will remember the medal :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no I think you said it all!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks both of you! ^-^

OpenStudy (anonymous):
