Why are so many people turning against factory farming?
I think because it's putting smaller farmers out of business. Also, factory farms are more likely to use pesticides and GMO than smaller farms.
Cuz the cow says moo
uhhh smaller farms use GMO's too and pesticides
I own a large carrot farm, we don't use any of that fadoodling fakes stuffs. I simply use some unicorn poop and stardust to make my perfect carrots!
Yes, but the consumer associates small farms with natural-ness and organic-ness, even when that isn't actually the case.
it is all about competitiveness in the free-market
well its all as @LeeEtchison said that smaller farms will go our of business and also smaller farms wont use all the chemicals but factories we dont know
that doesn't support the idea why MANY people dislike factory farming. maybe the only people that do not approve are the "small" businesses themselves, which doesn't make any sense, because a lot of our produce are imports from south americas (factory farming) the question itself is quite vague and too broad, in my own opinion. I would try to respond to it more specifically like how our farms here are affected if we keep importing from other countries, which utilizes factory farming. The are probably more issues that can be raised, but this is the one that comes on the top. I say you should read your materials, as this is a question that does not just get pulled out of someone's anus.
who wouldn't want to purchase cheaper produce in today's age when all prices are going up while salaries are steadily stagnant? There's always a reason why such problem exists that does not make the issue just one dimensional.
Purchase @Obama for unlimited cows and apples
Many ordinary people (I know quite a few) actually disapprove of factory farming, for the reasons I listed above. However, I'd say that the main reason behind it is that people rebel against the idea of standardization and conformity. It's why people opposed the Industrial Revolution at first, and people oppose factory farming today. The human brain doesn't want to be standardized. It wants freedom of expression. Factory farming is just an example of the issue, not the larger issue at hand. Of course, for your paper, unless it's highschool you probably won't need to go into all that detail.
what comprises MANY? half the population of the US, a quarter, a tenth or MOST?
as far as research is concern, there is no data that supports this claim
the question must be very specific that it was pulled out of a material, which I am inclined to read and examine its validity by looking at its citations.
I'm not saying that there have been studies done on it. I'm saying, from my personal experience, quite a few people that I know or have heard of dislike factory farming. Besides, I'm guessing her prompt was for an essay, in which case she can't just say "No studies have been done." I think that you rather overanalyze things. ^_^
This is just about New Zealanders, but here's one study: http://www.safe.org.nz/articles/150914/new-poll-reveals-strength-opposition-factory-farming
then we cannot use your experience to validate the MANY part of the question. I am not trying to be difficult. I am just encouraging and teaching a proper way of tackling problems at a collegiate level, which even High schoolers should learn.
Hey @vita955 , is this a prompt for an essay, or what is it? :)
that's New Zealand poll, how about the rest of the world? or was the question more specific to the United States?
yeah its for an essay i have some other questions that go with this.
@nincompoop Just google it and you can see easily that there are a multitude of articles against factory farming. I understand that you're trying to reason it out, but in schoolwork, one often has to just complete the assignment, even when the assignment doesn't necessarily make complete sense.
Also, I forgot to say, animal cruelty is also another major reason people are opposed to factory farming.
She didn't say "most," she said "many."
despite the big buzz and noise that people advocating for non-farming of animal is doing, the majority of people are unaffected here in the United States. It doesn't concern the people so long as they do not day by day witness the "cruelties" being claimed. I've work on this, so I am fully aware of the opposing sides and studies involved. I've also read one of many compelling arguments against animal farming overall. Read Peter Singer's work alone and you would think that he owns the public on this debate, but reality is that he doesn't. Most people do not care.
that is what I am saying, in argument and logic, we need to see what comprises MANY.
we need to establish statistical studies
without data, you're just another person with an opinion... it doesn't establish facts.
just read on Peter Singer's papers about this issue of cruelty on animals. You would be blown.
Right, technically, that's correct. However, it's also slightly unrealistic for most students. I'm guessing the teacher doesn't know a lot about this subject, either. Look, vita, Just go with what I said, expand on it, maybe look up the book Chew On This. Most teachers aren't looking for perfection, they're looking for adequacy and coherence. :)
maybe... you're correct, just maybe if the idea of this exercise is to able to write essay with good structure and grammar, then what you say probably will suffice (though I highly disagree). The content is at the heart of how we structure our ideas - arguments and even counter-arguments. When providing content, validity is the most important part, otherwise it is just BS'ing work, which is not very intellectually satisfying for anyone (my strong opinion) especially to the person who wrote the paper. In my experience with writing papers is that my ideas have been affirmed, but more importantly, it has also been changed because I would have to heed to research and data and present them without bias. One should learn QUALITY content when writing essays even at early age.
I know. That's what personal essays are for. Sadly, one has to learn how to write essays that please the teachers and earn good grades, though, even if it does mean that a lot of the time one's essay are complete and utter BS. Such is our society, and unfortunately one has to learn to comply with it in order to survive, even if it does mean sacrificing quality too much of the time.
essays*
this topic is not personal essay-related. were you given materials to read, @vita955 ? would you care to read and STUDY it or paste it here so we can assist you comprehend it if you have a double understanding.
it takes me about a good week to write a good paper, because I believe that my work reflects the things that I value and I would achieve on convincing people or at least provide something to ponder about, otherwise it would just be rambling.
@LeeEtchison can you help me
