New's for brain
One of the explanations I've heard for this myth is the relative proportion of the brain dedicated to neurons and glial cells. Glial cells had historically thought to be structural, little more than "brain glue", while it was the neurons that did all of the "work" in the brain. It's a commonly cited factoid that 90% of brain mass is composed of these glial cells. Therefore only ten percent of your brain mass is the neurons responsible for processing information. It's easy enough to translate that into the truism that "humans only use 10% of their brains". Of course this is wrong on two counts: There's no evidence for a 10:1 ratio of glial cells to neurons, and modern neuroscience has found that glial cells are more important than we thought. http://blogs.scientificamerica... Of course given some of the history of the myth presented in this article, it's most likely this is just another ex-post-facto justification. It's interesting how we settle on a conclusion first, and continually invent new justifications to support it.
