OpenStudy (ericwise):

How many 7 letter words can be formed from the word EQUATOR if...

OpenStudy (ericwise):

E) the letters Q, U, and A must be seperated?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hey um I think I got the idea but im having trouble with the multiplying...

OpenStudy (ericwise):

Hey man don't worry about it, I appreciate your willingness but you need to know about factorials and how to apply them before you will be able to assist me here. Don't feel like you owe me anything. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh yeah and here...

OpenStudy (catlover5925):

is it EQUATOR or EQUATION???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

..... I kinda do feel like I owe u something cuz its like u helped me but I didnt help u and I was raised like that so yeah...

OpenStudy (ericwise):

Hi @Catlover5925 it is indeed equator

OpenStudy (ericwise):

@CoDsTeR9000 Trust me, I'm cool about it. Unfortunately you haven't reached the necessary level of education which is a fact I understand and respect. If it makes you feel better you can fan and medal me :) that seems to be what most of us on the site strive to acquire anyways.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok man if you say so.... thanls anyways for the problem solver! :)

OpenStudy (ericwise):

@CoDsTeR9000 you are welcome, I hope you found it helpful.

OpenStudy (catlover5925):

im soo sorry but i dont think any words can be made from this, but you have posted this question like 3 times

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Anyways I gtg so seeya guys.... and gals!

OpenStudy (ericwise):

Hi @Catlover5925 the goal of this question it to find all the possible arrangements of the letters, the results dont have to be real words, as long as the specifiec criteria is met it counts. Sorry, about that perhapes I should have specified.

OpenStudy (ericwise):

*specified

OpenStudy (ericwise):

@CoDsTeR9000 Adios.

OpenStudy (catlover5925):

so EUTAOQR would work??? :/

OpenStudy (catlover5925):

is this homework??

OpenStudy (ericwise):

that's right

OpenStudy (ericwise):

it is... grade 12, do you know about factorials and permutations/combinations etc?

OpenStudy (ericwise):

If not, it's not nearly as straightforward as it may seem.

OpenStudy (catlover5925):

oh yes!!!!! ok so first thing first do you think this is a permutation or combination

OpenStudy (ericwise):

permutation, brb 1 sec

OpenStudy (ericwise):

back

OpenStudy (ericwise):

it is a permutation because the order matters

OpenStudy (catlover5925):

so it would be \[_{7}P _{3}\] do you have the P button on ur calculator??

OpenStudy (ericwise):

I do, can you explain how you got this?

OpenStudy (ericwise):

oh! wait!

OpenStudy (ericwise):

I think I know what to do now

OpenStudy (ericwise):

I need to find the possibilities in which those three letters are seperated using 3!*4! = 144

OpenStudy (catlover5925):

wait you use factorials when they cant be repeated next to eachother

OpenStudy (ericwise):

then, subtrace from the value of 7!.... I think

OpenStudy (catlover5925):

here this is what i am looking at http://www.mathsisfun.com/combinatorics/combinations-permutations.html

OpenStudy (ericwise):

yeah, you just do it differently. I'm still foggy on the steps though

OpenStudy (catlover5925):

look at the site

OpenStudy (catlover5925):

you use them in diffrent situation i am in 10th grade and learned this in 8th grade

OpenStudy (ericwise):

hmm, doesn't seem to overview this particular scenario

OpenStudy (ericwise):

standby

OpenStudy (ericwise):

yep! that's the way to do it

OpenStudy (ericwise):

(7!) - (3!)(4!)

OpenStudy (catlover5925):

wait how...doing a factorial?? awesome then i agree cuz i am totally lost!!!!!!

OpenStudy (ericwise):

we get 4896

OpenStudy (ericwise):

I used this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wf7PB1WkAv8#t=704

OpenStudy (catlover5925):

yes thats it...good job!!!!!!

OpenStudy (catlover5925):

can i have a medal??

OpenStudy (ericwise):

around 10:53 maybe, thanks. Sure! you deff stuck arond for a while!

OpenStudy (catlover5925):

yep, lol :)
