It is thought to be due to the bursting of gas bubbles formed inside the synovial fluids due to applied pressure (Solubility of gases decreases with decrease in pressure and increase in volume) but yes it is still a hypothesis. Read http://www.loc.gov/rr/scitech/mysteries/joint.html

i heard it is also considered as rubbing of 2 bones against each other after applying pressure...but i have heard this
